Buccaneers sweep Midland Tourney

MIDLAND, Texas -- It was deja vu all over again for the Blinn College volleyball team.

The Buccaneers swept Vernon College and Midland College on the second day of the five-team tournament, defeating the same two opponents they defeated on the tournament’s first day.

Blinn beat Vernon 30-24, 30-21, 30-13, then defeated Midland 30-20, 30-14, 30-22.

“We played uninspired, mainly because when you play the same opponent twice it gets kind of monotonous, but we had good numbers,” Blinn (4-0) coach David Rehr said.

The tournament was originally scheduled to include San Jacinto and Hutchinson (Kan.), but those teams dropped out of the tournament, leaving five teams, including one of Blinn’s conference rivals, Panola. That resulted in some strange scheduling for the Bucs.

But for redshirt sophomore middle blocker Lina Vanegas, it was worth the wait. Vanegas sat out all of last season with a back injury, and was a force for the Buccaneers throughout the tournament.

Vanegas led the team with 12 kills against Vernon and had five against Midland, and led the team with six blocks in each match despite playing just two games in each.

“She’s playing awesome right now,” Rehr said. “Every game she’s had at least six blocks, and she had 11 kills the first time we played Midland. She’s on a tear. She’s going to be able to take over matches on her own.”

Sophomore outside hitter Hayley Ball also finished with 12 kills against Vernon, while setter Caroline Witte had 15 assists in one game and freshman Kayla Schmidt had 20.

Courtney McDonald finished with five aces, and Lori Hunsucker and Sabrina Daniel each had nine digs.

Sophomore Chelsea Reber led the Bucs with 9 kills against Midland, and Witte had 24 assists. McDonald added another four aces, earning the title “queen of the aces” from Rehr, while Sydney Milburn had 14 digs.

“I would have been upset if we were to drop a game,” Rehr said. “We should have swept that tournament. We were just playing at a different level, and we needed to maintain that level of intensity.”

Blinn ran its second team in the final game of both matches.

Blinn will play its home opener Tuesday against Lee College at 6 p.m.
