The Blinn Buccaneers’ win streak is now at seven matches after the sixth-ranked team in the nation defeated both its opponents in the first day of its Labor Day Classic on the Blinn College campus.

Blinn defeated Laredo 30-10, 30-28, 30-24 in its tournament debut, then beat Redlands (Okla.) 30-23, 32-30, 30-23.

“This is a stacked tournament right now,” Blinn (7-0) coach David Rehr said. “Redlands is the real deal, and Laredo has talent, they’re just not playing well right now. We really had to play hard to get that win, and Redlands is a good team. They battled us point for point.”

Blinn went down 12-2 in its third game against Laredo before rallying with a 28-12 surge. Sabrina Daniel had 12 kills and Hayley Ball had nine in that match, while Stefanie Robbins added six kills.

Caroline Witte had 28 assists, while Sydney Milburn finished with 13 digs and Daniel had 11.

Blinn got a dominant performance from Robbins against Redlands. Robbins, a sophomore middle blocker from Three Rivers, had 10 kills and seven blocks in that game.

“She did a fabulous job,” Rehr said. “It was unbelievable how well she did. She took over the match; she did everything she had to do.”

Sophomore middle blocker Lina Vanegas rolled her ankle during the match, but was able to return later without ill affects. But even during her absence, Blinn was able to roll thanks in large part to Robbins’ presence in the middle of the court.

“You get a happy feeling because she’s the product of her own work ethic. She deserves everything she’s getting because she worked for it,” Rehr said. “She was aggressive offensively and defensively.”

The tournament continued Saturday with a 1 p.m. match vs. Temple followed by a 5 p.m. match with San Jacinto.

Blinn has yet to lose a game this year.
