Early voting opens Monday Democratic primary runoff

The 3,100 Washington County citizens who voted in the recent Democratic Party primary election, plus any qualified county voter who didn’t vote in the party primaries, will be eligible to choose — beginning with early voting Monday — between Dale Henry and Paul Thompson as the Democratic nominee vying for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission (opposed by GOP incumbent Michael L. Williams) in this November’s general election.

Thompson finished first statewide for the Democratic Party’s nomination to the post and Henry garnered the runoff position by receiving more votes than a third candidate in the race, Art Hall.

Thompson easily carried Washington County but collected less than 50 percent of votes cast statewide.

A total of 1,255 county Democratic Party voters chose Thompson, while Hall edged out Henry, 496-491, for second place in the initial round of this party primary election.

And in what might best be called a commonplace irony in instances where candidates for certain state offices are not well known, at least 800 of more than 3,100 Democratic Party voters (most picking Sen. Barack Obama or Sen. Hillary Clinton as the party’s U.S. President nominee) did not cast a vote at all for the railroad commissioner seat.

Election administrator Linda LaCross has announced that there will be a week of early voting, just as if there had been multiple Democratic Party positions to be determined in the runoff election.

Early voters should bring their voter card and report to Room 105 in Washington County Courthouse between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. next Monday (March 31) and on through these same weekday business hours Friday (April 4).

There will be also be one polling place open in each of county’s four commissioner precincts, running 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 8, for this runoff election between Henry and Thompson.

These locations, and the precinct boxes covered by each, are as follows:

  • All three-digit voter cards beginning in “1”: Brenham Community Hall, 101 North Chappell Hill St. — Boxes 101, 102, 104, 109, 115, 116, 121, 124, 126, and 133.

  • Voter cards beginning in “2”: VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Hall, 1200 East Tom Green St. — Boxes 203, 205, 208, 217, 231 and 232.

  • Voter cards beginning in “3”: Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library, 100 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway — Boxes 307, 311, 312, 319, 320 and 327.
