For the second time in as many seasons, the Blinn Buccaneers took out their aggression after a tough loss on the Tyler Apaches. Blinn scored early and often Saturday on their way to a 52-3 thrashing of Tyler at Spencer Stadium.
The Bucs (4-1, 2-1) put up 371 yards of total offense against an Apache squad that seemed helpless to stop anything Blinn did on either side of the ball.
“Our players held themselves to a higher standard on game day and in preparation,” Blinn coach Brad Franchione said. “I think it showed on the field today.”
Blinn was coming off a triple-overtime loss to Kilgore last week.
Pre-season All-American Terrance Cain had a solid effort, completing 14 of 26 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns.
All three of Cain’s touchdown passes came in the second quarter, including a 5-yard strike to Justin Jordan that put the Bucs up 35-0 at halftime. Cain also punished Tyler with his feet, running for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Reggie Brown rushed for 116 yards on 15 carries including a 12-yard scamper in the first quarter that helped the Bucs jump out to a quick 14-0 lead.
“We just stayed focused and stuck to the game plan,” Brown said. “I just tried to hit the hole and make something happen.”
Defensively Blinn’s dominance against the run was finally slowed a bit as the Apaches were able to pick up 131 yards on the ground but Blinn seemed to be in control of the line of scrimmage when it counted most.
“I think our defense rose to the challenge against what I think is one of the better offensive lines in our conference,” Franchione said.
“We had a good plan. I was a little worried on Tuesday because it was a complex plan. On Thursday it started looking a little better and today our kids did a great job running to the ball. Obviously we made a few mistakes and that’s where they picked up a few yards, but for the most part they did a great job.”
So potent was Blinn’s attack against the Apaches that the Bucs couldn’t even stop scoring once the game was well in hand and the backups were getting time. Travis Cobb fielded a kick-off return at the 2-yard line after Tyler’s lone field goal and took it all the way for a 98-yard touchdown return.
Cobb said that it was all the more exciting because it was his first career touchdown.
“We had worked on left kick return all week,” he said. “When I got it I looked left and went. Prizell Brown made a nice block and I saw the hole and I just used my speed to take it to the house.”
Franchione said that although the return came with the game already decided, the score was extremely important to Blinn.
“We needed something like that to happen on special teams,” he said, “because once the kids see it happen once, then they start believing that it’s possible every time.”
Saturday’s win marked the first of only three home games this season and Franchione said that only made the win sweeter.
“I’m excited about where I see us going,” he said. “It’s good to see the kids protect our stadium and understand how special it is to play at home.”
