Veterans Day events slated

Published:
Saturday, November 8, 2008 9:10 AM CST
Veterans Day on Tuesday will be celebrated with a program at Fireman’s Park, governmental office closings and events at schools here.

The main program will be held at Veterans Plaza in Fireman’s Park, beginning at 11 a.m. Sponsored annually by local veterans service organizations, the program will feature addresses by state Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, County Judge Dorothy Morgan, Burton Mayor Peggy Felder and Brenham Mayor Milton Tate.

Recognition of veterans will also be made.

Guest speaker is Dale L. Eppinger, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who saw extensive action in Southeast Asia.

Eppinger received the Air Force Cross — second-highest medal awarded by Congress — for his part in a daring rescue of a seven-man reconnaissance patrol in Vietnam in April 1969.

Eppinger flew his helicopter gunship through heavy fire to help rescue the patrol, which was in danger of being overrun by a large contingent of enemy soldiers.

His helicopter was shot down, but Eppinger assumed command on the ground and directed air strikes that drove away the enemy soldiers.

All of the patrol members and Eppinger’s air crew were rescued.

Eppinger, who now lives in Victoria, Texas, also received 11 air medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

He was commissioned in 1955 through the ROTC program at Pennsylvania State University and then graduated from helicopter flight training school at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Eppinger has more than 600 hours of combat air time and flew 1,200 sorties in southeast Asia.

He retired in 1986 after more than 30 years with the Air Force.

Veterans Day programs are also scheduled throughout the day, including Brenham Middle School at 8:45 a.m., Alton Elementary at 9 a.m., Brenham Junior High at 10:15 a.m., Brenham Elementary at 1:30 p.m. and Krause Elementary at 1:45 p.m.

Brenham High School students will shuttle to the Fireman’s Park program beginning at 9:30 a.m.

City of Brenham facilities will be closed Tuesday in observance of Veterans Day.

There will be no residential trash pickup, but there will be commercial trash collection by Texas Commercial Waste.

The city-operated waste collection station and recycling center will be closed Tuesday.

All city facilities will reopen Wednesday with normal business hours.

The Washington County courthouse will also be closed Tuesday.
