BISD picks superintendent search firm
By ALAN NIESCHWIETZ/Staff Reporter
There was only one big item on the agenda at Monday’s meeting of the Brenham school board, and that was choosing between two search firms to assist the board in hiring a new superintendent.
The choice was between the Texas Association of School Boards and the DRV Educational Solutions — which is affiliated with the Region Six Educational Service Center through its management — and the board decided to go with DRV.
Superintendent David Yeager said the cost of either was about the same, $7,000, and they both provided just about the same services. Those would include advertising for the position, collecting applications and making a recommendation on candidates.
The board members present seemed to agree it was a decision between six of one and a half dozen of the other, and several said they were partial to DRV because the already had a working relationship with Jim Vincent, the man who runs the company.
Assistant Superintendent Jim Bruce said Vincent is a former superintendent himself, and works part time for Region Six leading area school board members, including Brenham’s, through their state-mandated training hours.
Bruce said that another plus is the Vincent knows the area, and that may help in matching a potential superintendent to the district.
Also at the meeting:
Assistant Superintendent Deanna Alfred introduced several of the roughly 26 recipients of mini-grants, which range in value from several hundred to $1,000, and are used by teachers to buy things such as dyslexia-specific teaching aids, math practice kits, science activity kits and so forth.
Approved the transfer of one acre of district property to the McNeese family, who have in turn promised to donate $500 to the district.
Yeager said the issue was pretty cut and dried, and that even thought the land had been district property since 1883, it was deeded with the understanding that a school would be built on the property and it never was.
Approved the resignation of Bruce, who will be retiring Dec. 31.
Discussed the district’s earning of 14 Gold Performance Acknowledgments.
“This is the best we’ve done in a while,” Yeager said, and added that the district usually gets about 10 every year.
