Goodfellows of Washington County has raised its goal for donations, a step made necessary by an increasing number of applications for help again this year, organizers say.

Goodfellows held the first signups last week, with two more days of taking applications Monday and Tuesday.

“Yeah, we had a busy week,” said Mary Barnes-Tilley, who is again heading this year’s drive. “We’re expecting it to be another record year.”

She said that Goodfellow’s goal this year is to raise $45,000 in cash donations.

“$35,000 (the goal for the past few years) is not cutting it when we have a hundred more families that we’re trying to help,” Barnes-Tilley said. “We spent $50,000 last year.”

Exactly how many people Goodfellows will help this year is still undetermined, with two more days of taking applications and then a review of each one.

“I’m expecting it to be about the same, but we won’t know until we complete the screening process,” said Barnes-Tilley. “I’m sure we’re going to have a similar situation to what we had last year.”

Applications will be accepted Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. at the Washington County fairgrounds sales facility.

Goodfellows will distribute items Saturday, Dec. 20 from 7 a.m.-1 p.m., also at the sales facility.

Volunteers are being sought to help with that distribution, including packing Friday, Dec. 19 from 2-5 p.m. in the exhibits building at the fairgrounds.

Monetary donations can be mailed to Goodfellows, P.O. Box 11, Brenham 77834. To make donations of canned goods, toys and bicycles, call 830-0809.
