Lady Eagles return to playoff action tonight

The Brenham Christian Academy Lady Eagles are in the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

The team has improved from where it started but didn’t reach its goal of winning the district. Instead, they enter as the fourth seed out of their district and that is disappointing, head coach Matt Maples said. BCA plays its first-round game at Houston Texas Christian at 5:30 p.m. today.

“The girls improved greatly over the season,” Maples said. “Their hitting and serving improved a lot, and their overall playing has improved.”

The girls also understand the game more and have the ability to make adjustments, Maples said.

“As long as we play well then we can be competitive this playoff season,” Maples said. “I like our odds and we have some potential to turn heads.”

Captains Tori Franke-Mireles and Macy Anderson have to pull the team together when it starts to come apart, Maples said.

“I think we are going to do pretty well,” Anderson said. “There are a lot of people who didn’t think we would make it but I want to prove them wrong.”

The Lady Eagles, who are 6-12 on the season and went 6-6 in district play, think they will go farther this year than they did last year. Franke-Mireles and Anderson said they would have won their first-round match against Port Arthur Ridgway last year if their setter wasn’t sick. Last season marked BCA’s first playoff appearance in five years.

“I feel more excited about playoffs this year,” Anderson said. “We were so nervous with our setter out and a six-hour drive.”

Franke-Mireles said she knows what to expect this year and is not as nervous as she was last season.

“We are a young team and we learn from our mistakes,” Franke-Mireles said. “We came into the season without a setter and now Anna (Dahlquist) came in and has taken the role and improved a lot.”

Anderson, the more vocal of the captains, doesn’t want to see the season end.

“It has been really cool to see the freshmen girls improve and grow,” Anderson said. “Kimberly (Steen) has stepped up tremendously as a freshman.”

Sara Moore has also seen the improvement the Lady Eagles have made during the season and is excited about going farther this year.

“Everyone has improved so much,” Moore said. “Kimberly has improved her kills, Anna improved as a setter and our captains are great.

“We are going to do very well. We have a lot of girls stepping up and improving.”

Tamara Taylor said the team will get past the first round this year.

“Macy and Kimberly are really good up the middle and we have good back players,” Taylor said. “At first family and friends didn’t think we could make it to the playoffs this year, but they have seen us improve every year.”

Moore said the team learned to play together and she learned to serve better under Maple. The Lady Eagles never had a male coach before and that was something that they had to get used to.

“When we first saw coach we didn’t know what to think about him, but we know he is a good coach now,” Moore said.
