HOUSTON - The Brenham Christian Academy volleyball team’s season came to an end here Tuesday night with a straight-set loss to Houston Texas Christian in the first round of the TAPPS Class 1A volleyball playoffs.

Houston Texas Christian defeated BCA 25-14, 25-7, 25-23, marking the second consecutive year BCA has seen its season end in the first round of the playoffs. Last season marked BCA’s first playoff appearance in five years.

“Texas Christian was a very steady team with a lot of poise. My hat goes off to them,” BCA (6-13) coach Matt Maples said. “Our struggles were mainly centered around our passing and serving tonight.”

Maples said the Lady Eagles only hit about 75 percent of their serves, and freshman setter Anna Dahlquist didn’t get many assist opportunities, though she converted enough to finish with 11 on the night.

Macy Anderson led the team with seven kills, while Kimberly Steen added six kills, two blocks and five digs. Tori Franke-Mireles had six aces and six digs, while Sara Moore added another six digs.

Maples said freshman Barbara Daley came off the bench in Game 3 to serve for BCA in a tight final set.

“I thought we had a good game plan coming into the match and I felt the girls were ready,” Maples said. “I obviously didn’t press all the right buttons tonight, but with these girls I know we will be back.”

BCA does not graduate any seniors from this season’s team.

Anderson finished the year with a team-high 142 kills to go along with 30 blocks and 154 digs. Tamara Taylor had 57 kills, 22 assists and a team-high 155 digs, while Dahlquist finished up with 206 assists in her first high school season.

Franke-Mireles converted 91 percent of her serves and had 68 aces, 25 kills and 119 digs. Steen finished the year with 61 kills, 25 blocks and 113 digs.

“Overall, contrary to our record, I would say this was a successful season,” Maples said. “The girls showed a lot about their desire to learn the game and to compete. I believe that if we keep our players from this year and add a little more depth to our roster, we will be a strong team for the next few years.”

This was Maples’ first season as the Lady Eagles’ head coach.
