Morgan Ashley

Morgan Ashley is a Columbus native who now calls College Station home. She began playing music just four years ago and she is wearing out the highways of central Texas as she plays gigs from Dallas to San Antonio.

She’s rising in the country music ranks and just released her first full-length album, “Karma.”

Who are your songwriting inspirations?

Kacey Musgraves is number one. She actually wrote my favorite song by Miranda Lambert, which is “Mama’s Broken Heart.” Then Miranda Lambert and the Pistol Annies. And of course Taylor Swift. She wrote No. 1 hits when she was 15 years old, so of course I’m going to listen to her music for inspiration.

What is your dream scenario with music?

My dream scenario with music would be to end up like Cody Johnson and be the first female independent artist to sell out NRG Stadium at the Houston Rodeo.

If you had a full loaded tour bus, what would some of the features be?

I do leather work, so I’d need a place for that because if we’re on this tour bus for hours and hours at a time, I’d need something to do. A wall of guitars would be awesome.

Who are the best country music songwriters?

Hillary Scott, the lead in Lady Antebellum. Kacey Musgraves, obviously. And Cody Johnson.

Is there a difference between a good song and a popular song?

Yes. I feel like a popular song, as in pop music, is just a bunch of repeated words. It just sounds cool but they don’t really know what they’re saying. A good song is where you get chills from the words.

What’s the difference between Nashville country music and Texas country music?

I feel like Texas country music tells more of a story and Nashville is really based on how good of a hook you can write and the melody.

How important is radio play these days, with the prominence of the internet?

I think radio is very important, especially for a young artist like myself to go out there and meet of these radio personalities and form a connection. But also, internet radio has become a huge thing, so that’s also a big part of it.

… songs you wish you wrote?

“Mama’s Broken Heart,” by Miranda Lambert. “Follow Your Arrow,” by Kacey Musgraves. “Bored If I Don’t,” by Kaitlin Butts.
