There is one thing one of my best friends, Shannon, from college told me that has stuck with me for years. Her best friend from high school, who was also her roommate in college, often would go to Shannon for advice. There were times where Shannon was going through tough stuff herself or had a long day. The two friends had a polite way of setting their boundaries with each other: “Can you handle me talking to you about this right now?”

A lot of times we get swept up in our own daily drama and we forget those we love around us have their own stuff going on. And that stuff can be heavy. It’s hard to bear someone else’s burdens when you’re carrying a full load yourself.
